The rather grand RI theme for the year was “Build the future with action and
vision”, and as usual Haven got on with fellowship and helping others less
fortunate, wherever we could find them. It was our concern that so few local
community needs came to our attention
that we launched the “Challenge Yarmouth” initiative, in the hope that
this would flush out many worthy causes. Even this challenge in the local
press failed to produce very many suitable causes and it was not until the end
of the Rotary year that the renovation of the Scout Hut at Hemsby emerged as a
feasible project.
Fund raising events were all a
great success. I recall a glorious summer’s evening for the horse racing
organised by the International committee, a cold and blustery evening for the
greyhound racing organised by the Community Service committee and the quiz
organised by the Foundation committee. These events raised some £6,800 of
which £6,200 was distributed.
Social
and sporting events were well supported and enjoyed by all who took part, and
included a number that no longer feature in the present day calendar, such as George
Ermini’s boat day, pool party at Potters, bowls evening and inter club
sports challenge.
The disappointments of the year
were the slow reaction to our “Challenge Yarmouth” initiative, the failure
to progress a possible link with the Grand Haven Rotary Club of Michigan USA
and the loss of meaningful contact with the Winschoten Club in Holland.
As
all Past Presidents will agree you take the Chair with a certain amount of
apprehension, but the support and humour of members quickly dispels this
feeling, and you find that you are enjoying the position and relish the fact
that you represent the Club in the outside world and look forward to the
weekly meetings in “control”. The months pass by so quickly and before you
realise it your year in office is over!
