Visit to Radio Yare on July 12th 2010

Members , John Wiseman, Alan Spinks, John Clark, Monty Spandler, Des Sadler, Terry Ashbourne and John Tomalin were invited to tour the premises of local hospital Radio Yare this afternoon after the Rotary meeting.

The invitation to the Club was from Peter Burrage , the Programmes Manager, following his talk to the Club a few weeks ago. Peter's ambition is to achieve all the broadcast spots filled with a live show. He says " I've been trying to achieve this as an ideal for 5 years but at the end of July it came within in one show from a reality" .

Hospital Radio Yare broadcasts 24/7 on 1350khz Medium wave, to most of the James Paget hospital , Northgate and also in Lowestoft. All who keep the station running are volunteers and have up to 30 broadcasters doing 1 and 2 hour stints. Peter took us through all aspects of the running of the radio station and its need to keep equipment up to date. The necessary licences are essential and for every request played ,there has to be a copy of the music on cd,vinyl or tape.

Outside interviews are recorded and also Grapevine, the talking newspaper for the Blind is also broadcast. It takes some time to train people to become broadcasters and the right person has to have skill and technical knowledge to achieve the necessary goal of being on air.
