Press
Release
31st January 2005

10th
January 2005
Following
last week’s press release regarding the efforts of Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary
Club members to raise much-needed funds for the Asian Tsunami Disaster Appeal,
Rotarian Mike Butcher provided an update for members at last Monday’s lunchtime
meeting. Of the initial £13,000 collected at various locations throughout the
town, a sum of £12,250 has been credited direct to the Shelter Box account for
payment of 25 shelter boxes. These will provide semi-permanent shelter and basic
necessities for 250 people and are in addition to the five previously funded
from the Club’s Charity fund. The Shelter Boxes have already been despatched to
the stricken areas.
Ongoing
collections have increased the current amount received to over £16,000.
A
magnificent effort by the staff at Potters Leisure Resort who organised a
special show last Sunday specifically to raise money for the Disaster Appeal has
produced a sum of £11,650, with money still coming in. This is to be channelled
through the Haven Club to arrive at a current grand total in excess of £28,000.
The 14 clubs (including Great Yarmouth Haven) in the area have raised over
£58,000 and District 1080 figure is £260,000. The funds will be used to address
both the immediate and long-term needs of those people in the disaster areas.
Rotarian
Mike Butcher commented that he felt humbled by the support of all those
concerned with the appeal.

Despite
their break for the Christmas holiday period, the members of Great Yarmouth
Haven Rotary Club made a prompt response to the Asia Tsunami Disaster Appeal. A
sum of £2,500 was authorised on the expenditure of five shelter boxes. These
will be despatched to the stricken areas under the auspices of Rotary
International. Then, following the initiative of Rotarian Mike Butcher, members
rallied round with collecting tins at various venues throughout the town and
raised a total of £13,000 in three days. The sum is likely to go direct to the
Shelter Box fund and will provide semi-permanent accommodation and support for
over 250 people. A total of £9675 was raised at Tesco’s Store, £861 at B & Q,
£907 at the Oceans Rooms, £762 at the Atlantis Arena and a further £400 at the
Long Bar Complex and the Marina Centre. Additionally, a number of personal
contributions have been made through Gift Aid to swell the amount from income
tax rebates. The final total is expected to grow as the proceeds from other
collections and from a special show at Potters Leisure Resort are received. For
those wishing to support this event, it takes place at the Resort’s Atlas
Theatre on Sunday 9
th January at 2.30 p.m. (Adult tickets are £10 and
£5 for children). President Michael Woods wishes to express his sincere thanks
to all those involved in raising the money for this worthwhile cause and
commented, “All our efforts have been made out of respect for the resilience of
the people to rebuild their lives with the help that we can send them”.
October 2004
Following a request to Vocational Service Commitee
Chairman, Des Sadler, the members of Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary Club agreed to
purchase a new football strip for Hemsby Hornets under 13 football team. Hemsby
Hornets have ten teams currently involved in the Norfolk and Suffolk Youth
League ranging from under 7's to under 13's. The team, flanked by their coaches,
are shown in their new strip after presentation by Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary
Club President Michael Woods (centre) and (to his left) Rotarian Des Sadler.

HAVEN ROTARY
ANNUAL DUCK RACE
After the excitement of the
Olympic games, Yarmouth residents can enjoy their own golden event with
the return of the Annual Duck Race organised by Great Yarmouth Haven
Rotary Club at the Waterways, North Drive on Sunday 19th September. This
year, there are three races - a green race and a yellow race each with
2500 ducks, separated by a corporate race with over 100 ducks. The green
race is sponsored by Screenprint Plus, the yellow race by Potters Leisure
Resort and the corporate race by the local business community. There are
1st (£200), 2nd (£100) and 3rd (£50) place prizes for each of the green
and yellow races. As usual, the Mayor will start the event - first race at
2 p.m. There are still plenty of ducks available (£1 each) for those
wishing to purchase one - from any Haven Rotary Club member, at the event
prior to the races or from a number of seafront hotels or other commercial
outlets in the town.
This year, in addition to an
operational display of model boats prior to the races, there is an added
attraction in the form of a display of Chinese Kites.
Funds raised from this event
will be collected by the Club's Charity account and allow the support of a
number of worthy charitable causes, rather than to one single charity.

ROTARY CENTENARY
2005 marks the centenary year of Rotary International. When
Chicago lawyer Paul Harris invited three friends to a meeting in 1905,
little did he suspect that it was the start of an organisation that would
grow, a century later, to 28,000 clubs with more than 1.18 million members
in 155 countries. In this country, there are 1834 clubs with over 59,000
members.
With their motto “Service Above Self”,
Rotarians utilise their skills and beliefs to enhance the qualities of life
for those in local, national and international communities. At an
international level, the promotion of peace and goodwill throughout the
world is a prime motivator. Membership is drawn from the business and
professional community and Rotarians encourage high ethical standards in all
vocations.
In commemoration of the Rotary Centenary,
Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary Club is joining forces with Potters Leisure
Resort and The Lord’s and Lady Taverners to provide a minibus for the use
of Autistic Way. The charity, which incorporates Smart Kids OK, works
towards providing a better quality of services for the children and their
families who live with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders) and ARD
(Attention Related Disorders).
Coincidentally, Brian Stoyel (second left), National President
of RIBI (Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland) was visiting the
area with District Governor Malcolm Whittley (far right) and, taking an
interest, decided to visit the project and congratulated all concerned as he
witnessed Great Yarmouth Haven Club President, John Clark (centre), handing
the minibus keys over to Jacky Porter (left of centre), Team Manager of
Autistic Way last Wednesday (28th January). Supervising proceedings are some
of Jacky's young charges, Brian Potter (far left) and Jonathan & Tina
Russell (second and third from right), Mayor and Mayoress of Great Yarmouth.

1st April 2003
Local Rotarian Tony King, Honorary Secretary
of Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary Club, was surprised by President Mike Butcher who
had nominated him for a special award from Rotary International. The Four
Avenues of Service Award can be awarded for outstanding service in any one of
four fields: Club, International, Community and Foundation. Whilst Tony, a
founder member, had earned his award for his outstanding service to the Club during
its 21 years history, President Mike Butcher commented that he could
equally have gained the award in any of the other three fields. Since its
inception in 1997, only three other Rotarians in the East Anglian area have
received the award. It is the prerogative of the acting President to nominate
one prospective candidate during his term of office and forward supporting
evidence to Rotary International for their consideration. The award was
presented by Past District Governor Brian Baxter at the President's Ladies
Night, the highlight of the Rotarian Year, which took place on Friday 28th
March.

at their recent District Conference at Potter's Leisure Centre, Hopton Nr Great
Yarmouth, they were encouraged to join in a giant Raffle in aid of East Anglia's
Children's Hospices.
The result saw the grand sum of £3575 being raised. The
raffle was organised by Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary Club who came up with a
number of first class prizes.
Presentation of the cheque was made at The
Burlington Hotel Great Yarmouth, during the Annual Ladies Evening of the Haven
Club by the Rotary District Governor Brian Baxter.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of East Anglia
Children's Hospices was Janice Hulett. The Funding Officer
The District Governor thanked all Rotarians
throughout the District for their wonderful effort in again helping such a
worthwhile cause, just one of many to which wholehearted support has been given.
