A year packed with events, perhaps the most notable being the “Great
Millennium Duck Race”. There had been a great build up to this during my
Vice-Presidency year, and its success has been built on every year by the
International Committee with the support of all members.
The year also saw Mike Butcher pulling the cart for “The Return of
Nelson”, followed by a Pageant on the Market Place. Previously, members had
supported “The Nelson’s Return” evening at the Ocean Rooms on Trafalgar
day, 21st October.
Looking back, it hardly seems possible so much was achieved, notable fund
raising with aid going to the Indian earthquake Appeal, Children of Chernobyl,
SOS and many others.
Social
events were strongly supported, with another London Theatre Visit, no missed
last trains this time; Gourmet, Greyhound, Quiz and Treasure Hunt evenings, and
the Club managing to win the Inter Club Sporting Event at Potters. The only
omission was the cancellation of the Walking Weekend due to the Foot and Mouth
outbreak.
On the downside, the misappropriation of Charitable Funds by the District
Treasurer came to a head, resulting in a levy being applied to all club Members
throughout the district.
I
thank all my fellow officers and members for giving me such tremendous support,
making my year thoroughly enjoyable as President of “ The Best Club in the
District”.
