This
was a tremendous year both for Rotary world-wide and at club level.
The Rotary theme was “Enjoy Rotary” and our club certainly did their
best to make sure every member was aware of the fellowship and enjoyment to be
had from regular attendance at our meetings.
Many
new projects and interests were introduced to the Club during the year, all
designed to make Rotary not just a “dinner club”. Many discussions were encouraged by the membership and
important votes were taken – probably one of the most important being the
debate on allowing women in Rotary.
One
of our first-time activities of which I am particularly proud was the
introduction of the “Havenews”, a regular news sheet giving details of the
Club’s activities. I am delighted
that Brian Nichol continued with it. Introduction
of vocational chats was a great success &
introduction of three scheduled evening meetings generally met with approval.
This idea made the Christmas meeting so much more fun and it enabled
speakers to have more time for their presentations.
Elsewhere in this booklet will be made mentioned of our current Youth
Exchange with Michiko Yamada visiting us and my son Richard going to Japan.
The
news of the sudden death of our Immediate Past President Geoff Drury was a shock
to us all and we will remember Geoff for all his efforts for the Club and his
cheerful and encouraging outlook on life.
The
highlights of my year were many and varied and I hope members will recall some
of them by looking again at their copies of Havenews. Thank you for all your support during my year in office.
