The Haven Barn Dance May 30th 2009

On Saturday 30th May the Community Service Committee organised a Barn Dance in Hopton in aid of the local Charity ‘Crossroads’.

This organisation has to rely on outside funding for its ‘Wednesday Club’ which meets in Great Yarmouth every week  enabling those suffering from dementia and alzheimers together with their carers a chance to meet and be entertained by the charity workers.  This club has to be self financed and Haven Rotary Club having already financed a six month period pledged to raise funds to allow this group to continue for a further 6 months. So the Barn Dance was organised and over 100 attended this event under the guidance of the caller with the band ‘Shindig’   With cameras flashing throughout the evening it was the inspiration of one Rotarian to place a short clip on the website ‘You Tube’.  This event was very successful and all those attended had a great time even though it took most of the evening to learn several dance movements.

Over 100 attended this event with several Rotarians and their guests dressed to suit the occasion and being aptly guided by the caller from the band ‘Shindig’. Several pictures were taken on the night and as a result one of the dance routines can be viewed on ‘You Tube’( courtesy of Victor Ling who was adjudged to be best in fancy dress !

Special thanks to the Committee of Community Service for their splendid organisation, Terry Hall for the loan of his wonderful barn, and the Rotarians wives and partners who provided the magnificent spread of desserts !

The raffle was a great success, the 1st prize of a flight with Peter Gethin in his aircraft went to Terry Hall ! Rotarian Colin Brooks also painted a special picture which was won by Margaret King. Thanks to all for the donation of prizes.

The bar was splendidly run by John Burroughs ( The Apollo Tavern , Northgate Street ) and his charming bar staff !

We can confirm that we exceeded our target of £1.800.00 with further funds going into the Community Service Fund.

Lorraine Long from 'Crossroads' will be at the Club on Monday 15th June to receive the cheque.
